This electronic portfolio is to demonstrate my understanding of the learning outcomes of the Vancouver Island University course EDTE 431 Instructional Design: Application of Educational Technology, instructed by Julia Hengstler. It will also demonstrate my development in the understanding of the British Columbia Teacher Regulation Branch Standards for Educators.
Technology, Education & Me
The use of technology in education has been a large part of my career thus far in the 20 years I have worked in the K-12 setting as an education assistant. I have always had a passion for technology since I programmed my first Commodore 64 when I was about 8 years old, was bought a Nintendo Entertainment System, and was one of the first students to use my elementary schools’ first computer lab. Since, I have continued my education with technology as it is a passion of mine.
When I began working for the school district I began to learn about new educational technologies and with them the concerns and complications that accompany them in the form of policies and privacy issues. Especially with the advent of web 2.0 and the emergence of social media have I seen a dramatic shift in how technology is used in schools.
Since starting the teacher education program at Vancouver Island University I knew there was an educational technology course that I would be required to complete. After enrolling in the course I was confident the learning curve for me would not be as steep as it would be for most, however, the content covered did push me to look at the use of technology in the K-12 system in a more comprehensive way that before.
With the culmination of the course upon me where do I see myself going with technology for teaching and learning? I feel my understanding of the issues that are inherent when blending technology and education in the K-12 setting has evolved to include a deeper obligation how privacy and policy will impact my practice and students. Since technology innovation is outpacing educators, understanding of how, when, and if the technology should be used with students in education should always be considered and proper vetting must take place.
