Core Competencies

The core competencies are educational concepts that I have been exposed to since their inception of the birth of the new British Columbia curriculum (now BC curriculum). Being exposed and having them around is only part of the equation. Since embarking on this journey to become a teacher I am no longer just being exposed to what the core competencies are, but being taught how to use them and how they impact student learning.

COMMUNICATION

The communication competency encompasses the set of abilities that students use to impart and exchange information, experiences and ideas, to explore the world around them, and to understand and effectively engage in the use of digital media. (2018, Province of BC)

My exploration of the communication competency has shown me students can communicate in various ways. Students can be very creative with the ways and methods they can share or receive information from verbal to physical to digital.

THINKING

The thinking competency encompasses the knowledge, skills and processes we associate with intellectual development. It is through their competency as thinkers that students take subject-specific concepts and content and transform them into a new understanding. Thinking competence includes specific thinking skills as well as habits of mind, and metacognitive awareness.(2018, Province of BC)

My exploration of the creative and critical thinking competency has demonstrated that students can demonstrate knowledge and their approach learning in various ways. Students are able to use thinking processes to enhance and extend the lessons being taught by the teacher.

PERSONAL & SOCIAL

Personal and social competency is the set of abilities that relate to students’ identity in the world, both as individuals and as members of their community and society. Personal and social competency encompasses the abilities students need to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world. (2018, Province of BC)

My exploration of the personal and social competency has given me the insight that in this world of ever growing connectedness that students can become even more disconnected than ever before. I have found this competency is the most important as it pertains to a students relationship not only to others, but with themself.
